I guess there are a lot of things I don't and will never understand. But then, as a fucking weird, queerball American, I have gotten quite used to not really having many rights to speak of.

Oh, and this from the American Family Association's daily mailing (you gotta keep tabs on the other side, y'know)... "Christians, prepare for persecution!" (You know, as a logical result of the future Obama presidency and the ban on gay marriage in CA...)

Yeah. That's right. We people of alternative sexualities are soooooooooo abusive to the poor, poor Christians. Yeah, that's how it is.

When in doubt, how 'bout some "phenomenally dreary Christian singing"?

<lj-embed id="210" />

Hallelujah!

The Palin naming meme

(This is doing the rounds...and is appropriate because she is speaking on my TEEVEE right NOW!)

From Wikipedia:
[Sarah Palin] married her high school boyfriend, Todd Palin, on August 29, 1988.[6] The Palin family lives in Wasilla, about 45 miles (72 km) north of Anchorage. The Palins have two sons (Track, 19, and Trig, four months) and three daughters (Bristol, 17; Willow, 14; and Piper, 7) [ages as of August 2008].[98] Todd Palin has said Track's name came from the interest Sarah's parents had in the sport and the fact that he was born in the sport's season; Bristol was named after Bristol Bay in Alaska, where Todd grew up and where he does commercial fishing; Willow was named after Willow, Alaska; Piper got her name because it is uncommon and "a cool name"; Trig's name is Norse for "strength".

1)Your first-born will be named after your parents favorite sport:
Eh. My dad really likes Tennis. Tennisballs it is.

2)Your second-born will be named after a nearby area that you're not from but you like the sound of part of the name, and maybe you have nostalgic memories of said place:
Moravia? Where the trailer used to be?

3)Your third-born will be named after another nearby place, for no reason other than you already have two children and don't have time to put much thought into another name:
South Butler.

4)Your fourth gets a "cool" name:
Tyrannosaurus Rex

5)Your fifth gets something mythological, possibly straight out of Lord of the Rings:
Power Pig.

That's right. I have 5 babies: Tennisballs, Moravia, South Butler, Tyrannosaurus Rex & Power Pig.

    <lj:music>"Smalltown Boy"--Bronski Beat</lj:music>

First of all, I, like many on my lj friendslist, love animals. Yes, in that general of terms. It's not just that I'll have a cuddle on the floor with your dog or attempt to get your cat to curl up in my lap, I have trouble killing mosquitoes and worry about the safety of daddy longlegses (or longlegsi?)

Ever since I first learned where my hot dogs and chicken patties came from, I felt SICK and CHEATED and I vowed to not eat those things. (Admittedly though, that's a little sketchy when your single-parent father is struggling to make you dinner after work every night with his limited culinary skills and frankly you're eight and hungry.) Anyway, I've always found it difficult to distinguish the heartbeat of a chicken or a pig from that of my much-beloved, rotating house cat. So, for most of my adult life, I've chosen not to eat certain things. Though, inexplicably as of late, I am able to discern the difference between my littlest tiger, Oscar, and say... a nice cut of salmon... I know, I know! I am a total hypocrite!

AnyWAY...

This has always been a silent protest. I have always held my tongue when a friend shows up at the party with a fur stole and scarfs half the ham and cream cheese tortilla roll-ups on the sideboard. Who am I to judge? With my leather belt, leather shoes, leather wallet, and... occasionally... about a dozen jumbo shrimp and horseradish digesting within the lower regions of my body?

But, this article: be warned it's NOT pretty, brought my household to a standstill tonight. I feel horrible posting this, but I feel the more awareness the better. Even tho, I don't necessarily know WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT...

I simply don't understand... how this is possible. And, I'll be real; I didn't make it past the first couple of paragraphs. Carrie, however, even watched the video. And hasn't been her usual goofy self ever since.

Wow. There are no words. I'll be hugging my cats extra tight tonight. Not in a cruel way.

She also checked all of the clothing in her room for an indication of "Made in China". Needless to say, neither of us are in a position to throw our entire wardrobes away. The damage is already done and it would just be another bump in a never-ending landfill and a very cold genderqueer and roommate this winter.

Our consumption creates atrocity. That's all that can really be said.

And I'll also say, with no uncertainty, that my own personal consumption hasn't been something I've ever taken a long look at. It's incredibly easy to pass on the turkey, but quite another thing to sew one's own boxer shorts when such colorful, fun ones are shipped fresh from torturous, inhumane environments everyday.

I sat in on a conversation last night. People in my group of friends are taking steps to become more conscious and self-sufficient. The general consensus is that either you are owned by corporations or you own yourself. The overwhelming feeling was that even little steps: the plant you grow yourself to eat or share with friends, the pair of pants you sew the tear on instead of tossing, the yellow you let mellow, the mile you walk, the consciousness you put in before you make purchases, everything you make, refurbish, or renew, the recyclables you gather each week, the clothing, products or technology you continue to use because they still do the job though they're not the "latest" thing, the locally-made products you buy, the shower you don't take in the morning because it's Saturday and you're just doing housework anyway... are STILL steps and they count.

("Oh, how adorably American," I somehow hear most of the world heave in their native tongues.)

Yeah. So, I think I'm converted. I won't be howling at you in pain like Morrissey if you decide to take pleasure in a veal cutlet (but face it, you ARE disgusting... it's a fucking BABY!) or shopping at <s>ChineseChildrenExploitat</s>Wal*Mart with wild abandon, but I am done with all this mindlessness. As much as I can be done, I am done... with whatever little bitty baby steps I can take.

The only thing I vow to take liberties with is, naturally, my own body. And I am very glad that school will be starting in a week and the greatest overindulgence of my life, Mr. Alcohol, will have to move out along with his mark of mystery bruises. Being a mess is awesome! Eh.

(Btw: I drank local, organic wine tonight. Go me.)
